VPX Technology
VPX Technology
VPX is a broadly defined technology utilizing the latest in a variety of switch fabric technologies in 3U and 6U format blades. Open VPX is the architectural framework that defines system-level interoperability for multi-vendor, multi-module, integrated system environments. The Open VPX framework defines clear interoperability points necessary for integration between module-to-module, module-to-backplane and chassis. Open VPX will evolve and include new fabric, connector and system technology as newer standards are defined.
HARTMANN Electronic’s VPX Standard backplanes are designed to allow any COTS or customer-specific configuration in either 3U or 6U form factor by providing a wide range of available VPX and Open VPX profiles. All the HARTMANN backplanes support minimum PCIe Gen2 and most of the backplanes can handle PCIe Gen 3 / 10Gbit Ethernet. Within the scope of a customized backplane development, we can even reach transfer rates of up to 100Gbit Ethernet and PCIe Gen 4.
Having recognized the need to achieve interchangeability on a system-level basis, HARTMANN Electronic and
W-IE-NE-R Power Electronics are currently developing SOSA compliant products. Moreover, we can proudly mention that our partner company Orion Technologies, which also belongs to the rugged computing group, is already an official SOSA member.
State of the Art Power Technology
VPX Power Supply
The VPX340 and VPX336 series are commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) conduction-cooled, ruggedized, small-form-factor power supplies according to the VITA 62.0 specification.
The VPX340 (400W) and VPX336 (360W) can be used to power VPX / Open VPX chassis and will fit into the standard envelope defined by VITA 48.0 specifications.
They are designed for military and aerospace applications and MIL-STD compliance tested according to MIL-STD-461F, MIL-STD-704F and MIL-STD-1275D.
High overall efficiency is achieved using state-of-the-art switching power technology. The VPX power supplies are outfitted with advanced features, such as reverse-input polarity protection, EMI filtering, full over / under voltage and surge protection, over current and over temperature protection, and operate within a wide input range voltage.

Most Diverse system yet
Development chassis
The HARTMANN Electronic Open Frame Development Chassis Series is our most diverse system yet. Available for 3U or 6U, with 34HP or 50HP with space for up to 12 slots, this versatile test system is sure to be an engineer’s best friend. A strong frame with an adjustable locking grab handle, along with a light-weight design, make our Open Frame Chassis the perfect companion for easy transport from the lab to the testing grounds.
The Open Frame Chassis have built-in, manual-controlled 120mm front fans and monitoring for fan and voltages. Optionally, the customer can have conduction cooling arrangement for single slots or for the complete chassis. Different widths and combinations of 3 and 6U slots are also available.
These systems are available with or without a backplane, in air-cooled or conduction-cooled variants, and with 600W ATX power supplies. Backplane options include variants of CompactPCI, Serial, PXI, VME, VPX and more. Custom configurations are available upon request. Ask your HARTMANN representative for more details.
Superior Interconnections
VPX Backplanes
The base of each VPX-System the VPX Backplane is the most essential component that enables superior interconnections between all of the installed modules and it should be selected carefully.
One of our core competencies is the development of customer-specific backplane layouts. Based on the experience of thousands of successfully developed high-speed layouts and a decades-long history in layout servicing, we are confident to exceed your expectations.
VPX Backplanes may be designed in accordance with VITA 65, feature optical or coaxial interconnects defined by VITA 66/67 or be completely independent of the VITA standard. Ask your Hartmann representative which configuration is best for you!
Rugged Computing
Within the Industrial Components division of the Phoenix Mecano Group, HARTMANN Electronic, W-IE-NE-R Power Electronics and Orion Technologies form the Rugged Computing subdivision. All three companies are unified by the common goal to develop and produce solutions for rugged computer systems.
Operating in Remote Areas
Anti-Poaching Surveillance
The HARTMANN Electronic cPCI Serial chassis was selected for the Reutech radar unit as an integral component of the meerkat surveillance system in South Africa. The Postcode Meerkat wide area surveillance is comprised by radar, cameras and information analysis software able to detect, track and classify people entering protected areas such as the Kruger National Park. The system is used as part of the park’s anti-poaching operations.
In order to support fast data transfer between the different surveillance radar sub-system components and the processing computer, HARTMANN Electronic developed a four-slot / 3U high speed cPCI Serial backplane and integrated this into a compact and ruggedized, field-deployable chassis. Being DC-powered, this chassis can operate on batteries or solar power in remote areas as the Kruger National Park for extended periods of time.
