CompactPCI Backplanes, Plus I/O and Serial
Based on the Eurocard form factor and 19” mechanics, CompactPCI (PICMG 2.0) is a proven and well-established parallel bus standard for cost-effective industrial computers. Additions to the core specification, such as hot swap, multi-computing, and I/O of mezzanine cards guarantee performance for more demanding industrial requirements.
Serial point-to-point connections like SATA, SAS, USB, Ethernet, or PCI Express now coexist with the parallel PCI bus technology in today’s modern computers. Point-to-point connections via user-defined pins on the J2 connector leads to incompatibility between different manufacturers.
Two new PICMG standards – CompactPCI Plus I/O (PICMG 2.30) and CompactPCI Serial (PICMG cPCI-S.0) define integration of serial high-speed signals into the 19" system.

CompactPCI Plus I/O:
Adds fast serial data transfer , and is backward-compatible to CompactPCI (PICMG 2.0). CompactPCI Plus I/O defines the pin assignment of the free User-defined pins on the J2 connector (PICMG 2.0), sufficient for 4 PCI Express x1 links, 4 SATA, 4 USB 2.0, as well as 2 Ethernet 1000BaseT interfaces to the backplane. The new standard uses a different 2mm connector with 5 Gb/s to support the new high frequency signals. Even though signal pins are individually shielded and independent of the other pins, the connector is completely compatible to CompactPCI. This means a CompactPCI 2.3 CPU can be operated in a PICMG 2.0 system.
Hybrid systems, combining CompactPCI Plus I/O and existing CompactPCI boards, offer an ideal migration path to CompactPCI Serial.
CompactPCI Serial:
Moves the existing CompactPCI parallel bus architecture to serial high-speed interconnects. Switches and bridges are not needed for a system configuration of one system slot and up to eight peripheral slots. Using a new rugged connector allows for a signal density of up to 184 pin pairs (3u) and transmission frequencies of 12 Gb/s, while maintaining the proven 19” mechanics of IEC 1101 and hot swap.
System slot supports 8 PCI Express Links (6 by 4 lanes, 2 by 8 lanes), 8 SATA/SAS, 8 USB 2.0/3.0 and 8 Ethernet interfaces plus signals for general system management (reset, IPMB, hot swap, geographical addressing, etc). It is supplied with 12V (60W per 3U, 120W per 6U slot).
Peripheral slots offer 1 PCI Express link, 1 SATA/SAS and 1 USB 2.0/3.0 interface. Each slot can support up to 8 Ethernet interfaces to build a full mesh. All interfaces are accessible at the same time. It is supplied with 12V (60W per 3u, 120W per 6U slot).
Since the pin assignment of the system slot and peripheral slots are congruent, it is possible to insert a system board into each peripheral slot to support symmetrical multiprocessing. The star topology is equal for PCI Express, SATA/SAS and USB. All peripheral slots are identical except two that are connected via PCI Express links by eight lanes. Ethernet is wired as a full mesh. Transmission is based on the proven standards for copper connections up to 10Gbase T to allow configurations of redundant, safety-critical systems.
